Raccoons can be cute but they grow larger than you think. At times, you can find them very smart and clever. Often, they behave very aggressively and may prove dangerous with sharp claws and teeth. In nutshell, you can never domesticate it. They always remain wild animals. They can take the lid off trash cans, and they LOVE garbage. They can pry open vents and windows, they like vacationing in attics getting into everything, if your garage door is left ajar, they will come and trash the place looking for food and shiny objects. They aren't pets. Much as you would like them to be, too, they just aren't. Here are the top five tips to get rid of these uninvited intruders. If you cringe at calling wildlife control experts, the best thing to do may be to assist them to learn how to avoid such raccoons.
Don’t let raccoons smell food: Raccoons enter your garage or shed if they smell food. You should keep your lawn free of fallen fruits or nuts. You should not even leave your pet food or water down when you’re not home. If you store grains, birdseed or pet food in a shed or garage, make sure lids are tightly-sealed and that there is no access points for raccoons.

Scare Tactics: You can try to scare them with motion-sensor devices. They can be ultrasonic devices or lights or motion-activated sprinklers. With the help of wildlife control experts, you can select the most suitable one, buy and install such motion sensor devices in your garage or shed. In addition, you can scare raccoons by creating noise such as blow horn or even your own voice by yelling at them. You can also own a large dog, bring it outside to face the raccoon and scare them away.
No more holes: Raccoons have a great sense of smell which helps them find food. If they could smell their next meal in your garage or shed they won’t hesitate to venture inside. Seal up all types of holes you find around the siding, foundation or roof. Raccoons can scratch open three inches wide or larger holes and can create an optimal entrance for them. Hence, cover such holes with either wood or caulk or expandable foam, or concrete.

Electric fencing: Raccoons are natural climbers. They can easily venture onto all types of tall places and trees. A normal perimeter fence surrounding your garage or shed area may not be good enough to keep raccoon away if they are dead set on getting into it. Moreover, baby raccoons can squeeze through any holes or cracks that are as small as three inches. One of the most effective solutions to keep raccoons out is with an electric fence. This is a great long-term effective solution to get rid of uninvited raccoons and all other types of wildlife creatures. Besides electric fencing, you can try to keep trees and shrubs cut away from the proximity so that it isn’t as easy to climb.
Effective use of barrier screens: Think about your chimney opening or side vents which is connected with your garage or shed. So far, if you have been ignoring these purposeful openings then NOW start thinking about these possible entrances. Don’t let raccoons crawl through these entry points. You can place barrier screen over these openings. For the same purpose, you can use simple materials such as mesh or screen, or nail plywood.
Raccoons can look charming, but you don’t want to come into contact with one if it’s being aggressive or happens to be infected or sick.
